Why cities form in pairs
Rivers are natural places for towns to grow, for water, trade and power, and a town on one bank often gets a partner on the other. Borders do the same thing: where a busy road or railway crosses from one country to another, towns grow up on both sides to serve travellers.
Over time some pairs merge into one city, as Buda and Pest did in 1873. Others stay separate but share buses, trams, shops and festivals, living as twins in everyday life.
